Occupational Fatalities

The Occupational Fatalities component is the industry-adjusted number of deaths from agriculture, fishing, forestry, construction, transportation, communications, manufacturing and services industries. Other industries were not included because they are not adequately represented in all states. Fatality information is collected from the annual Survey of Fatal Occupational Injuries.

The data were adjusted by using the ratio of workers in an industry to total number of workers in the measured industries. The ratios used are in Table 36.

Table 37 lists the fatalities in each occupation. If a state did not report a number for a specific industry group, the number of deaths was calculated based on the national average death rate for that occupation.
